     Asthma is a long term respiratory disease in which the airways may unexpectedly narrow often in response to allergen, smoke, cold air e.t.c. It makes breathing difficult and can lead to death if not properly handled.
     When we breathe in air the air goes into your airways (trachea and bronchi) and then to your lungs where it is passed into your blood stream via the alveoli. Asthma can cause the lining on the airways to swell and the muscles around them to tighten then mucus may fill the airways further reducing the amount of air that can pass through.
     This conditions then lead to an asthma attack which may be characterized by coughing and tightening of the chest.


Types of Asthma

     Bronchi asthma is the most common type of asthma it affects the bronchi. Others include;

Symptoms  of Asthma

     Symptoms of asthma include;

- Chest tightening or pain

- Coughing when laughing and during exercise

- Fatigue(Tiredness)

- A whistling or wheezing sound when exhaling

- Trouble in sleeping due to coughing or shortness of breath

Causes of Asthma

     No single cause has been identified for asthma instead researchers believe it is caused by a variety of factors which include;

- History of viral infections
     Individuals with a history of viral infections are more likely to have asthma than those who do not.

- Genetics
     If your parent/parents have asthma you are more likely to develop it.

- Allergen exposure
     Frequent contact with allergen and irritants may increase the risk of developing the disease.

Asthma Triggers

     Environment, conditions and exposure to various irritants and substances can trigger signs and symptoms of asthma. Some of which include;

- Cold air

- Air pollutants and irritants such as chemicals fumes and smoke

- Exercise

- Emotions such as screaming,crying, and laughing

- Preservatives added to some type of food and beverages

- Respiratory illnesses such as the flu

- Gastroesophageal reflux

Risk Factors of Asthma

- Weight. Children or adult who are over weight are more likely to develop asthma

- Genetics

-Age. Asthma is commonly diagnosed in children but can develop in adult too

- Environment. High rate of pollution increases the chance of developing asthma

- Gender. Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with asthma in childhood, but in adulthood women are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease

Treatment of Asthma

     Treatment majorly fall into 3 categories

 1. Breathing exercises
     This exercises help in increasing your lung capacity and getting more air into your lungs. Over time it will help in cutting down some fierce asthma symptoms.

 2.  Firstaid treatment
     This medications should only be applied in the event of an asthma attack as the provider quick relieve to its symptoms. Some include;
-Bronchodielators
-Anti-inflammatories
-Rescue inhalers

 3. Long term asthma control medicine
     This are taken on a daily bases to prevent symptoms of asthma

Home Remedies For Asthma
     Generally alternative remedies for asthma are not advised  for treatment of diseases. However,it can help in alleviating some of the symptoms. Some of them include;

- Coffee or caffeinated tea

- Inhaling essential oils; may trigger asthma in some individuals

- Mustard oil can be massaged into the skin to open the airways

Management of Asthma

- Managing stress

- Exercising regularly
     Although exercise can trigger asthma, regular exercise may actually reduce the risk of problems during breathing.
- Stop smoking

- Maintaining a healthy weight

- Eat healthier diet
